About this resource...

When teaching academic content (AC) through an additional language, i.e., a language which is not the learners' mother tongue (a foreign or second language) the problem many teachers face is finding an appropriate model of instruction.

An instructional model is a step-by-step procedure that leads to specific learning outcomes. The models of teaching approach emphasizes the need for variety in the classroom, which can only be accomplished by developing the teacher’s repertoire of instructional approaches to meet a range of objectives. The teacher who uses a variety of instructional approaches is more likely to reach all students in the classroom; moreover, students are encouraged to learn in a variety of ways.

Learning the models only makes sense within a context of good instructional planning and design.

First we have to decide What to teach and Why it is to be taught. This what and the why process of planning is the curriculum planning. Once we have planned our curriculum we have to plan how to teach this curriculum using a particular instructional model. This how process of planning is the instructional planning.
